ELLISLAND FARM

 Saturday 29th September 2018.

Nine members and three guests visited Robert Burns farm at Ellisland on a lovely sunny Saturday afternoon. They were met by the curator Stuart Cochrane who gave the company a comprehensive account of Burns's time at Ellisland. After attending a film presentation the attendees had a few hours to wander around the farm and outbuildings in the afternoon sunshine.

In the evening everyone sat down in the farmhouse kitchen to a delicious, well presented and served supper. The "haggis" was "piped" in on harmonica much to the amusement of the diners as it was a knitted version complete with legs, eyes and a smile. The address to the haggis was given by Dougie Smith and the Selkirk Grace by Tom Hart. After a leasurly supper of haggis, neeps and tatties, steak pie, tatties and veg, ruhbarb crumble and custard, cheese and biscuits and tea and coffee it was fair to say "all their well swollen bellies by-and-by were bent like drums" After the meal Dougie gave a stirring rendition of Tam O' Shanter, Bobby Wright treated the company to some favourite Burns songs and the company joined in later with jokes and rhymes. Tom rounded off the evening with a vote of thanks to the company and to the "Friends of Ellisland".

As the Club headed home everyone agreed that it was a fantastic unique experience to sit down to supper in the very kitchen that the bard himself ate supper.
